How I Landed My First Solo Mural Gig

Before this mural, I’d only worked on murals as part of a team—either assisting friends back in Perth or contributing to larger projects led by established artists. But when I moved to Victoria, I knew I wanted to branch out and take on a solo project.

I brainstormed how to get my foot in the door and decided the best approach was to start with people I already knew. At the time, I was working part-time as a receptionist at the BIG4 Castlemaine Gardens Holiday Park while growing my art career. I noticed that the kids’ room lacked colour and inspiration, and I couldn’t help but imagine how much more vibrant it could be with a mural.

I decided to pitch the idea to my boss, who owned the holiday park. “Why don’t I paint a mural on that wall?” I suggested. I explained that I could work on it after my reception hours and offered to complete the project at my usual hourly rate, which was less than what I would normally charge for a mural.

By pricing the job this way, I made it a low-risk decision for her while still gaining valuable experience and a portfolio piece. I gave her a rough estimate of the hours it would take and suggested that I create a design for her approval. When I presented the design, she was thrilled that I’d taken the initiative to improve the park, and it was an easy “yes.”

This project turned out to be a win-win situation: the kids’ room got a colourful upgrade, and I had my first solo mural to showcase to future clients. After this, it became much easier to secure other mural gigs because I could show that I was capable of managing these types of jobs from start to finish.

Why This Mural is So Special to Me

This mural is close to my heart because it was my first time taking on a mural project entirely on my own. From the initial concept to the final brushstroke, every detail was up to me.

It was both exciting and nerve-wracking to work solo, but it taught me so much about trusting my instincts and embracing the creative process. The vibrant colours and playful design were meant to bring a sense of fun and energy to the space, and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out.
